Brotherhood, Incorporated was established as a minority non-profit community based organization in 1996. The organization is governed by a board of directors that is reflective of the diverse populations served. The organization also operates Trinity House, which provides transitional and permanent housing in a group home setting to low income individuals living with AIDS. Staff of the organization are members of the New Orleans Regional AIDS Planning Council, the Louisiana HIV Prevention Community Planning Group, the American Public Health Association, the American Red Cross, and the National Minority AIDS Council. In New Orleans, Louisiana, HIV continues to disproportionately affect African-Americans. In 2009, 72% of newly diagnosed HIV cases and 71% of newly diagnosed AIDS case were among African-Americans. Nationally, Louisiana ranked 5th highest in AIDS case rates in the nation and 2nd in AIDS cases rates among the largest metropolitan areas in 2008. (LAOPH 2009 HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report vol.7).

The CDC reports:
Among men, African American men represent 41% of those living with HIV/AIDS. Among women, African American women represent 64% of those living with HIV/AIDS. At all stages of HIV/AIDS– from infection with HIV to death with AIDS-African Americans are disproportionately affected compared with members of other races and ethnicities.
